The land for the cemetery was sold to the Diocese of Peoria in 1881, by Adolph Krebaum and his wife. Bishop John Lancaster Spaulding consecrated the four acre cemetery on June 10,1881.
When St. Charles cemetery was purchased, Fr. Clements specified that the southern third be separated by a fence and unconsecrated. It was reserved for babies not baptized, non-practicing Catholics and the like.
The cemetery has been maintained by volunteers throughout it's history. A few years ago, a concerted effort was made to ensure the cemetery is maintained on a regular basis. Burials in recent years were overseen by the St. Frederick's cemetary board, until the St. Charles cemetery board was formed in 2016.
Mason County Genealogical & Historical Society walked the cemetery in the 1980's to create an alphabetical list of identifiable burials. The oldest burial listed is from January 1865, before the land was purchased by the diocese. Much speculation has surrounded the lone remaining tombstone of John Tully in the unconcecrated section. The coroner’s report of 1893, attributed this 36-year-old fisherman’s death to “heart failure due to drunk whiskey.” May he rest in peace.
